      <image:caption>Það er gott að hafa í huga að einstaklingur er ekki ,,aumingi” fyrir að upplifa einkenni áfallastreituröskunar. Við ráðum sjálf ósköp lítið yfir því hvað heilinn okkar ræður við á hverjum tíma þegar alvarlegt áfall er annars vegar. Stundum ,,frýs” áfallið og skráist ekki í kollinum á okkur á venjulegan hátt.  Áfallið heldur i áfram að valda okkur vanlíðan þótt atvikið sé liðið. Hvaða meðferðarform hentar til að takast á við áfallaröskun? Í klínískum leiðbeininingum um meðferð áfallastreituröskunar er mælt með EMDR áfallameðferð og áfallamiðaðri hugrænni atferlismeðferð. EMDR meðferð er öflug leið til að hjálpa okkur að skrá áfallið á nýjan hátt svo að það valdi okkur ekki sömu vanlíðan og áður. Í EMDR fræðunum er talað um að upplýsingaskráningakerfið okkar hafi ekki ráðið við atvikið. EMDR meðferð stuðlar að því að upplýsingakerfið okkar ráði við það.</image:caption>
